This is the Smith Family. They probably look familiar to you because I photographed and blogged their birth a few weeks prior. I’m going to walk you through my typical in-home newborn session.

You’re going to die when you see this baby boy’s hair! I always like to ask Mom’s when they come in if the old wives’ tale is true. You know the one about is you have heartburn during your pregnancy you’ll have a baby with a ton of hair. It’s surprisingly, almost always true.

Newborn sessions can be unpredictable no matter how much you prepare. This little babe just came into the world and is still figuring everything out – what else would you expect from them?

Sometimes at first, siblings need to check me out real good to see if they like me or not. By the end of the session, they always like me.

While I provide all props for a newborn session in studio, I always encourage parents to bring anything of their own as well… Especially sentimental items or favorite purchases.

Whenever I get invited into the special places to photograph the newness for families it’s never lost on me. It’s such a special, private, sacred time and each family that invites me into their home to document those moments trust me to be there with them. That in and of itself brings me so much joy. Then we create images like these in my heart explodes all over again.
